Key takeaways

Parents and caregivers know that children learn from every interaction and experience, whether it’s counting seashells, building with blocks, or exploring a science museum. It doesn’t matter where they are: children are like sponges, soaking up a great deal of knowledge every day.

In this article, we’ll discuss the benefits of learning at home and provide simple strategies to support your child’s learning. We’ll also share several resources and tools to help make learning at home more fun for your child (and for you!) Whether you want to help your child practice academic skills or build knowledge on a topic they love, we’ve got you covered.

What are the Benefits of Learning at Home?

Learning at home has several advantages. First, it allows children to practice the skills and knowledge introduced at school in a safe, supportive environment. Second, kids who learn at home can take charge of their education, discover their learning styles, and follow their interests. By learning outside the traditional classroom, children engage in authentic work, promoting critical thinking skills, independence, and creativity.

As a parent of two children, I’ve seen these benefits firsthand. My daughter often deals with math anxiety and sometimes feels the pressure more acutely at school. When she is at home, we practice her math skills by playing board games, taking nature walks, and making art. She knows that she can take her time figuring out problems, which lowers her stress level.

How to Support At Home Learning

Home learning is a great opportunity for kids to feel confident and empowered, and parents can support this by creating a positive learning environment. Try these strategies to help encourage learning at home:

  • Establish a routine. Children thrive when they know what to expect, so create a learning routine and commit to it as much as possible. Keep at home learning routines simple–more complex routines are confusing and harder to maintain.
  • Create a calm home learning environment. Dedicate a space for your child to concentrate on their learning. Ideally, this space should be tidy and organized to minimize distractions.
  • Show interest in your child’s work. This one is so important! Talk to your child about what they’re doing, reading, and learning– and truly listen to their answers.
  • Encourage their interests. At home learning gives kids the opportunity to pursue topics they’re passionate about, whether that’s art, architecture, or animals! For instance, my son loves reading mystery novels. So when I stumbled upon ‘Murdle’, a book full of logic-based murder mystery puzzles, I knew he’d love solving them at home.
  • Celebrate success. Be your child’s biggest cheerleader and celebrate even the smallest victories. When they see that their efforts are being noticed and rewarded, they feel more motivated and confident in their abilities.
